According to Polygon, the show will focus on Team Avatar as young adults, giving us a look at some of the events that happen between The Last Airbender and The Legend of Korra. There are, of course, a fair share of people who were hoping to see something focused on new characters, like those from the novels. (Given the tease in the announcement video, that’s understandable.)
Just got some HUGE NEWS from @janetvarney at our #NickSDCC Avatar: Braving the Elements – LIVE! panel, the first feature-length movie from Avatar Studios will be focusing on Avatar Aang and his friends! pic.twitter.com/dsbK1XMCe5— Nickelodeon (@Nickelodeon) July 22, 2022
If you’re in that camp, don’t give up hope just yet. This is just the first of three animated movies that the studio is working on, so there’s potentially plenty of room for other characters to get an on-screen debut.
Outside of Avatar Studios, Netflix is working on a live-action adaptation of the original show that’s due out at some point, though I can’t say I’m that excited for that one given a) the history of Netflix’s live-action adaptations, b) the history of live-action Avatar adaptations and c) the fact that the show’s original creators left that project.
